The Basement in Belconnen hosted the eighteenth popular (annual) showcase of live music last Saturday (8 March) to kick off the Canberra Festival.
The annual event kicked off it’s 18th show (since it’s beginning in 1990) at 11am and continued well into the early hours of Sunday morning.
Organisers are calling the show this year a success - With over 20 bands, a fashion show, market stalls and BMX and circus troops involved in extreme stunts.
An estimated 400, 500 punters rocked up to the Basement to enjoy the spread of live bands and the celebration of live music.
From a local audience member: “Indyfest seemed to be a big success… It really had a great vibe!” The ACT government provided support this year and this was the third year running as part of The Celebrate Canberra initiative. Organisers worked in collaboration with Celebrate Canberra to provide this showcase.
“There is such great talent here in Canberra, it’s really rewarding to be able to open the doors to the live music scene to the wider community” (Indyfest spokesperson)
The event showcases the best bands every year and provides networking opportunities for all involved. Event organisers see Indyfest as a gateway to the live music scene.
“Indyfest is a gateway for the youth and those new to Canberra to be involved in the live scene” (Indyfest SP)
This year highlighted not only live music, but a sponsored fashion show, market stalls (the food and coffee proving to be the most popular this year) and BMX Jam with BMX riders putting on extreme stunts behind stage, to the delight of the crowd.
The free outdoor event was enjoyed by all ages, families and in particular the youth community. The organisers hope to see a flow on from the event to other live shows around Canberra.
Organisers already have the dates set for their next meeting to discuss how they can make it bigger, better and further the live music scene in Canberra. |
